1. Wow it sucks if you’re a bear. I’m glad I’m not trading.

The S&P 500 is now comfortably above the bear market trendline. If you’re a bear, the only thing you can hang your hat on at this point is a double top possibility but I wouldn’t count on that since that would be way [...]

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:00 pm under Research

I just found an obscure paper written 13 years ago on stuff I was working on the last 8 months.
Wow, they beat me to it by 13 years.
UPDATE: I talked to my advisor about it. His general attitude is that it raises the bar of what I need to do. On top of that there’s [...]

I am going to Disneyland

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:47 pm under Research

You know how athletes after a big win proclaim that they are going to Disneyland?
I just had my conference paper accepted and I am going to Disneyland.
No kidding…I really am going to Disneyland…because the conference is at the Anaheim Convention Center which is right next to Disneyland, and after my talk, I will go to [...]

Motivation issues

Published by The Fake Engineer at 8:58 pm under Research, Stocks

It’s really starting to look like I can wrap up my Ph.D. by the end of 2010 instead of May 2011. I previously believed that the only way I’d be able to get out early is if my advisor ran out of money but it doesn’t look like that will happen. However, based on what [...]

My research isn’t trash

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:14 am under Research

Don’t you just love it when you’re sleeping and then all of a sudden it hits you…
WHOA, MY RESEARCH ACTUALLY ISN’T TRASH!
I had a paper deadline last week and I just realized that I probably should have included one crucial detail. My research is more awesome than I thought it to be.
Bah, oh well.
And yeah, [...]

This semester is going to suck

Published by The Fake Engineer at 8:11 am under Research

It is starting to hit me that this semester is going to suck.
I need to:
1. Be a TA. The semester ends in May.
2. Propose by the end of May.
3. Tapeout in May.
4. Go to a conference in May if I get in.
Man, this is so back-loaded but it is manageable.
It has also occurred to me [...]

Random stuff

I haven’t produced any substantial posts for awhile so this is intended to be a mishmash of thoughts.
Research
I haven’t been able to get my lazy butt to do much research while at home; however, I do not think it is fair to say that sitting on my lazy butt is a waste of time. While [...]

First out, last in

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:24 pm under Research

It just occurred to me that among the grad students in my office, I will be the first to take off for break and also the last one to come back. I’m disappearing for 3 weeks and 2 days.
I’m not sure if this fact is a testament to my efficiency or my laziness. It could [...]

For kicks and giggles…

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:26 pm under Research

Wow, I can’t believe I said that to my advisor today.
Testing is complete. As mentioned in yesterday’s post, the plan was to push my amplifier to the edge of destruction. After I collected all the data that I needed to collect, I started testing the limits of my amplifier, and in doing so, I fried [...]

Quick update

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:33 pm under Research, Stocks

Testing is going at a slow but steady pace. The main problem is that I need to test my power amplifier in a non-destructive way, but to get maximum performance I need to push my amplifier to the edge of destruction. The plan is therefore to do my frequency sweeps and input power sweeps at [...]
