Tapeout scare

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:49 pm under Research

During tapeout season,  every one or two days I have a major scare. Some potentially fatal issue would come up and I would have to fix it.
When simulating power amplifiers, the fast way to simulate is to run a periodic steady state analysis. The analysis assumes that your circuit is operating in a periodic steady [...]

A hard lesson

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:29 am under Stocks

This post is going to be a long one. It is a combination of a trade log, an analysis of why I got out of the trade, and a mini-lecture on trading. I believe this post will be very instructive because the primary determinant of a trader’s success is how the trader loses, not how [...]

What stupid looks like

Published by The Fake Engineer at 9:45 pm under Stocks

Wow that was bad. $420 loss for the day. I only get blown this badly probably once every 2-3 months. Max – min account balance for the day was a whole 6% of my account balance. When your account balance swings this much each day, I guarantee you that your account balance will approach zero [...]

Phew

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:05 am under Stocks

I’m glad I didn’t put that stop loss under $58.29.
The market bastards took it all the way down to $58.20.
UPDATE: Reckless again. Long 200 SRS at $21.93.

Trade log 5/27/2009

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:38 am under Stocks

I’m not waiting for 915. 910 looks like a brick wall.
Long 100 SDS at $57.30.
No stop loss. With the TNX flying the way it is, I’m fairly confident that the end is near.
UPDATE: Reckless. Added 1 June SPY 91 put for $2.60.
UPDATE @ night: Sold the SPY put for $3.35 10 minutes before the close. [...]

Trade plan last week of May

Published by The Fake Engineer at 12:59 am under Stocks

The plan this week is probably no trading at all. Tapeout isn’t going as well as I would have hoped, but if things change, I might do a trade or two this week.
Streaks don’t matter, and in a sense they are harmful. If I sit on my hands this week, I will finish the month [...]

Oh come on give me a break

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:31 pm under Research

Today is Memorial Day and I kind of decided to be lazy and work from home. It’s been very tempting to take a nap after starting a parametric sweep rather than to work on something else while I wait.
Just now I called my office to see who is in today and it turns out everyone [...]

Worst haggler ever

Published by The Fake Engineer at 3:48 pm under Stupid Stuff

I didn’t put up much of a fight.
And I fell for the old buy one get one free trick.
It’s a smart move by the suit salesman. Once the suit salesman gets my measurements and finds a size that fits me well, half of his work is done. The other half of his work is to [...]

No bottom if everyone expects one

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:55 pm under Research, Stocks

Over the last week or so, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to quite a number of people. The conversation usually goes something like this.
Person: How’s research going?
Me: Not too bad. I am kind of busy right now but it’s manageable.
Person: So how many more years?
Me: Probably two more years.
Person: Oh good, the economy should [...]

Perhaps the only time I dropped the F-bomb over the phone

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:57 pm under Stupid Stuff

Via WSJ…
The Federal Trade Commission is seeking to shut down a telemarketing campaign that has been making hundreds of millions of allegedly deceptive “robocalls” to sell vehicle warranty extensions.
In two related complaints filed in federal court on Thursday, the FTC said it was taking action against the promoter of the phony extended auto warranties, as [...]
