A crash seems closer by the day

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:19 pm under Politics, Stocks

This post should be in http://charts.vdsat.com but it is too important.
I am still kicking myself over bailing on my XLF puts when XLF was at $23.50. I can probably now safely say that dumping those puts is now my single largest mistake this year.

Price action in the financials has been in one direction and in [...]

Trade plan for 6/30

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:55 am under Stocks

My IWM July 72 put has an extrinsic value of $0.91 meaning that if IWM falls $0.91 between now and July expiration on 7/18, I will not have made any money. I would like to dump this option now and short one IWM July 68 call which has an extrinsic value of $1.02.  Doing this [...]

He who panics first loses less

Published by The Fake Engineer at 6:20 pm under Stocks

This post would normally go to Vdsat Charts, but this post is too important to belong there. I am telling you to get out of equities now. There may be a short term bounce here, but that’s all it will be if there is one, a short term bounce. He who panics first loses less.
Consider [...]

How not to trade

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:33 am under Stocks

I am still kicking myself for dumping my XLF puts on the 16th. This is how it happened…
I woke up around 10:10 am, rolled to the side of my bed, picked up my EEE PC and turned it on. I then closed my eyes to get a few more seconds of shuteye while my [...]

Published by The Fake Engineer at 3:48 am under Stupid Stuff

Every morning, without fail, these stupid birds start chirping at 3:40 am and they don’t stop until 6 or 7 am.

Everything is falling apart

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:40 am under Stocks

This is not funny:

Consumer Confidence hits a new low in June 2008: 50.4.  56 expected.  58.1 prior month.
Dow Chemical is hiking prices by 25% across the board, and that’s on top of the 20% hike announced not too long ago.
Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index falls to -12 in June down from -3 in May. Are you [...]

Workers dependent on tips get burned

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:06 am under Stupid Stuff

I was just reading an article about how workers who depend on tips are getting burned. I got to the following line and cracked up…
“Some who might have come in every four weeks for a haircut are trying to stretch it out and come in every six weeks,” said general manager Carla Frazier.

Haha, yeah and [...]

How to do meetings with your advisor the right way (part 2)

Published by The Fake Engineer at 5:17 pm under Research

Continued from part 1
4.  You don’t let your advisor push you around. That is, you are not his research slave.  If he tells you to do something, it is not an order, it is a suggestion.  Remember, he is your advisor, not your boss. You are the one getting the Ph.D., not your advisor.  He’s [...]

Chris Dodd is in deep doodoo

Published by The Fake Engineer at 3:03 am under Politics

I was too soft on Chris Dodd the other day. Now I want this guy out.

Yesterday, Tim Carney reported that the prevailing sentiment on Capitol Hill is that the Dodd-Shelby bill “is exactly what Bank of America and Countrywide wanted.” BofA is in the process of acquiring Countrywide. Countrywide is currently embroiled in a scandal [...]

The state of online encryption

Published by The Fake Engineer at 7:28 pm under Blog Junk, Stupid Stuff

Yes, I am bored.
With the recent release of Firefox 3 and Opera 9.5, it looks like EV SSL might actually take flight now. Users of IE 7 already had it long ago, but (a) only idiots still use IE and (b) the idiots who do don’t enable the anti-phishing filter when they are the ones [...]
