1. I forgot there was a dividend for the ProShares ETFs this week. I’ve been scratching my head half the week wondering why those ETFs looked so weak.
2. I couldn’t get myself to buy those EWT puts I was talking about last time. My short exposure was high enough and I didn’t [...]

I didn’t make any trades today but I want to get a few thoughts down. You’ll see these types of posts titled appropriately.
1. It seems that the rally ran out of gas.
The S&P 500 couldn’t close above the 50MA today.

The candlesticks the last 3 days look very similar to the candlesticks that [...]

Trade log 3/25/2008

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:33 am under Stocks

Bought one XLF May 32 put for $5.60.
Bought one XLF April 30 put for $3.95.
I didn’t actually want the May 32. I was looking for an April put that had a low premium on it and I was looking at the wrong month. However, the two options are essentially the same in terms of [...]

Anatomy of pure luck

Published by The Fake Engineer at 7:11 pm under Research

In this post written a few days ago, I wrote about how I had a layout bug and that my chip was not fully functional. In order to fix the problem, I would probably have to implement some ghetto hack. I e-mailed my advisor about it, and as expected, he said something along the [...]

Trade log 3/24/2008

What a bloody day.
I dumped all of my QID at $49.38.
I bought 2 QQQQ April 48 puts for $3.87. The QQQQ puts represent half the short exposure compared to my QID position. I see no point in buying UltraShort ETFs anymore when I can get the leverage I need with semi-deep in the money puts [...]

I may want to trade options more heavily

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:28 pm under Stocks

Here is the profit/loss plot if I short 100 shares of QQQQ as a function of the price of QQQQ.

As expected, if QQQQ falls $1, I make $100 on 100 shares short. If you plot the slope of the P/L plot, you have a delta plot which looks like this…

The delta is -100 regardless [...]

Anatomy of a layout bug

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:39 am under Research

I taped out a chip back in December and I got it back a few weeks ago. I started testing in on Friday afternoon and it wasn’t working the way I expected it to. I took a careful look at my layout and determined that I had an open circuit on my chip. [...]

I’ve had this link at the very bottom of the left toolbar for many months now but I have never mentioned it. I think it is about time I talked about it. If you know me personally, you know that there are few things I care and get excited about; most of the time [...]

Trade log 3/18/2008

I maxed out on QID at $53.90 again. I thought it was an absolute gift. QID closed at $51.36. Yes, I could have gotten a better entry point, but oh well, that’s life.
I think I need to be slightly more disciplined with my trading. My trading has been fairly sloppy in the [...]
