Early bird gets the worm

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:23 pm under Stocks

Yesterday I woke up for the 6:30 am PST market open. I picked up a chuck of TWM at $67.30 before the 7:00 am PST new home sales report. I picked up another chuck of TWM at $68.00 after the terrible new home sales report was released. Later in the day, I [...]

January effect starts in December

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:53 pm under Stocks

From Wikipedia:
The January effect (sometimes called “year-end effect”) is a calendar effect wherein stocks, especially small-cap stocks, have historically tended to rise markedly in price during the period starting on the last day of December and ending on the fifth trading day of January.
In the last couple of years, after the January effect became widely [...]

The opportunities keep coming

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:54 pm under Stocks

I’m glad I got stopped out yesterday on TWM because it is currently trading at $67.64. It is still above the $66-$67 range I said yesterday where I would want to pick up TWM.
The Russell 2000 is currently sitting at 780 which is right where resistance should be, but I have a hunch the [...]

Saved by the stop loss

Published by The Fake Engineer at 5:48 pm under Stocks

You can’t be right 100% of the time. For the times you are not right, it feels really good to have a tight stop loss.

Bought at $71.10, stopped out at $70.73, closed at $69.38. I’m glad I entered the stop loss order correctly this time.
What feels really good though is that TWM is now below [...]

Don’t forget the big picture

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:58 pm under Stocks

I didn’t see any good opportunities today. I feel that it’s too dangerous to go long right now because the trend in the short to intermediate time frame seems to be down. On the other hand, prices are too low to go short safely. I think I will be sitting in cash for quite some [...]

I am such a noob

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:21 pm under Stocks

I made a big blunder today. I intended to
1. Buy IWM at $75.50 or lower.
2. Sell IWM if it falls below $75.30.
I can enter these two orders at the same time. Here’s what I actually entered.
1. Buy IWM at $75.50 or lower.
2. Sell IWM at $73.30 or higher. [...]

Not a stupid bear

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:17 pm under Stocks

I dumped all of my TWM today at $73.90. I do not know if it was the right thing to do, we’ll see how it plays out, but I just had to take my profits. I really can’t complain about it because I picked up TWM at $69.86 (12/6),0 $68.63 (12/11), and $71.79 [...]

This is precisely why I don’t use stop losses

Published by The Fake Engineer at 7:05 pm under Stocks

This is an intraday chart of of TWM that includes today and the last 3 trading hours of yesterday. Each bar is 5 minutes.

Having a stop loss would’ve stopped me out at the open and the results would have been disastrous.
I’ve said this many times before: when you see this kind of crazy volatility, [...]
