Noticeable shift in market behavior

Published by The Fake Engineer at 12:26 am under Stocks

Over the last few months here’s how the market would typically behave over the course of a day.
9:30 am: Market opens and sells off HARD because of poor economic news.
10:00 - 10:30 am: Market bottoms and goes nearly vertical to break even for the day.
10:30 am until 4 pm: Steady increase with maybe a dip [...]

iPhone hype

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:52 pm under Stocks

As you already know from reading my blog, I’ve made many bad calls and have recently tried not to say anything definitive. However, given that Apple’s iPhone will be released tomorrow at 6pm local time, I would like to take some time and comment about Apple’s stock.

A company’s stock usually appreciates quite dramatically prior [...]

Alert: S&P 500 breaks key support level

Published by The Fake Engineer at 9:50 am under Stocks

DOW and Nasdaq are still above key levels of support. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. It may not stay below that level until the close, but if it does, the S&P 500 is in for a whole lot of pain. The S&P 500 is in severe need of a quick bounce [...]

US economy going off a cliff

Published by The Fake Engineer at 9:29 am under Stocks

Consumer confidence for June fell to 103.9.
Jan: 110.3
Feb: 111.2
Mar: 108.2
Apr: 106.3
May: 108.5
Jun: 103.9
Durable orders are falling
Jan: -6.1%
Feb: +0.5%
Mar: +5.1%
Apr: +0.8%
May: -2.8%
I have no idea how economists are predicting 2-3% GDP growth in Q2 when Q2 is shaping up to be worse than Q1 and Q1 GDP growth was only +0.6%.

Lazy over the weekend

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:46 am under Research

I meet with my advisor on Tuesdays and this time around I dug myself into a hole. I met with him last Tuesday and it was determined I had to do two things:
1. Prepare slides for Thursday’s group meeting and run some linearity simulations.
2. See what else I could do about a [...]

Critical week for stocks

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:40 pm under Stocks

This week seems to be a pivotal point for stocks. Investors will be bombarded will all sorts of information:
Monday: Existing home sales for May. While the number of existing homes sold is important, I’m more interested in the median home price this time around. That number did not drop much in April [...]

How to kill Amazon’s profits

Published by The Fake Engineer at 9:28 pm under Stupid Stuff

A few weeks ago I ordered 16 pounds worth of dumbbells for $26.38 from Amazon. Since my order was over $25, I got FREE Super Saver Shipping. Now think about it, free shipping on 16 pounds of junk and the total order is $26.38. What percentage of the $26.38 I paid to [...]

Published by The Fake Engineer at 8:18 pm under Stupid Stuff

I needed to buy some drapes because I kept waking up at 9am no matter how late I stayed up the night before because of the morning sun. I went to a Pottery Barn because it is close by.
Pottery Barn: Hi, how may I help you?
Me: I’m looking for some drapes, the thicker the [...]
