Being lazy and not being in my office

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:41 pm under Research

It seems that the only times you want to be here on campus is for classes. A PhD is much more than classes. -Advisor
Fortunately, I got that all cleared up and everything is fine and dandy. He didn’t realize that I was done with my layout. But yes, I really don’t want to be on [...]

Lame productivity

Published by The Fake Engineer at 12:41 pm under Class

Planned Saturday: Finish RF homework and read for RF and wireless classes.
Actual Saturday: Finished RF homework.
Planned Sunday: Okay, forget reading for the wireless class. If I can finish my reading for RF, I’m in good shape.
Actual Sunday: Didn’t do squat.
Planned Monday: Go to class, come home, finish reading for RF.
Actual Monday: Went to class, came [...]

Snowball fight with kids = Bad idea

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:31 pm under Stupid Stuff

1. You don’t want to hurt them so you don’t pack the snow.
2. They really want to hurt you so they pack the snow.
3. You’re dumb enough not to wear gloves.
4. They’re smart enough to wear gloves.
5. You’re bigger so you’re a bigger target.
6. They’re smaller so they’re a smaller target.

Firewire 400 vs. USB 2

Published by The Fake Engineer at 3:12 am under Stupid Stuff

No contest
Firewire 400

Avg read: 38.8MB/sec. CPU utilization: 4%
USB 2

Avg read: 28.6MB/sec. CPU utilization: 14%
USB 2’s CPU utilization is awful.
From wikipedia…
Although USB 2.0 can theoretically operate at 480 Mbits/s, tests indicate that this speed is rarely attained. This is possibly caused by the client-server architecture of USB, as opposed to the peer-to-peer network operation of FireWire, [...]

Motivation to get my Ph.D. sooner

Published by The Fake Engineer at 1:58 pm under Research, Stupid Stuff

My last haircut was in early August 2006 and it was a free haircut because I used this card…

I have not gotten a haircuit since then because I figured the weather would be pretty cold during the winter. Like any other reasonable animal, I grew out my winter coat. My hard work finally paid off [...]

Slow backup

Published by The Fake Engineer at 2:14 am under Stupid Stuff

I decided to create an image of my C drive today and it took 105 minutes to backup 95GB to an external drive over firewire 400. That’s about 15MB/sec and that’s well below the theoretical maxium of 50MB/sec for firewire 400. I’m not sure what is screwing things up. Here’s the read speed across the [...]

Getting burned by latency

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:49 pm under Stocks, Stupid Stuff

I decided to upgrade WordPress from 2.0.4 to 2.1 today mainly for the spell check, the autosave feature, and the improved AJAX interface. Before doing so, I had to backup my blog in case I screwed it up. Backing up my blog consisted of two parts:
1. Backing up the SQL database file that contains all [...]

Playing way too much DEFCON

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:20 pm under Stupid Stuff

In DEFCON, you start with 100 million people and a whole mess of nukes. Then you bomb the heck out of another player with 100 million people and a whole mess of nukes. Yesterday I killed 67.9 million people without losing a single one of my citizens.

I think I’m going to go for 90 million [...]

Warming up

Published by The Fake Engineer at 8:30 pm under Class

I was doing my homework today and I noticed two things:
1. I had a hard time picking up my pencil and writing legibly. Writing felt so unnatural because I haven’t done so for quite some time.
2. I had a hard time figuring out the real part of (a+bi)/(c+di) where i is the imaginary number. I [...]
