The price of necessary overdesign

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:38 pm under Class

Although I was able to get my amplifier to meet spec while consuming only 1.92mW, I realize that getting a circuit to meet spec with the absolute lowest power consumption is not the ultimate goal. I am glad that this project requires Monte Carlo simulations to generate a yield estimate. Since my amplifier just barely [...]

The idea is still alive

Published by The Fake Engineer at 4:59 pm under Research

My advisor didn’t understand my idea at first and thought it was crazy and stupid. By the end of our little chat I was able to convince him that it was an idea worth pursuing. It is possible that I have created an amazing circuit that is extremely immune to process variations and temperature. He [...]

Ups and downs

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:06 pm under Research

I didn’t do any research during the past week and I gave a pretty crappy presentation at today’s research group meeting.
A few hours after the research group meeting, I went to a professor’s office hours to talk about my circuit schematic for my class project. I drew a pretty funky circuit and the professor said [...]

Why are these specs so hard to meet?

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:53 pm under Class

It’s just a stinkin’ amplifier.
Gain: 54dB
-3dB BW: 25MHz
Load cap: 5pF
Either I’m a bad SPICE monkey, or 90 nano sucks. I’m tempted to use NeoCircuit. Whoever created this class project probably gave NeoCircuit some circuit topology, had it maximize some figure of merit, and then took 10% off the performance of the optimized circuit and used [...]

Random stuff I wanted to blog about

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:34 pm under Stupid Stuff

1. There are two masters students in my research group and both seem to be brilliant and are on top of things. I feel dumb.
2. I went to a picnic the other day. A ballonman was there to inflate balloons and to twist them into things. I asked for a dead worm and I [...]

Er, I have an office?

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:55 pm under Stupid Stuff

I don’t exactly have an office, it is at best a desk at a corner in a room. I sat in my “office” today and thought…
Er, I have an office?
As an undergrad, there were times when I was in class and I thought…
Wha? I’m listening to THIS dude speak?
There were times when I was at [...]

Big mistake

Published by The Fake Engineer at 8:03 pm under Research

A few months ago, Mr. Googoo told me that if I get a lot of work done all of a sudden, I should not tell my advisor everything that I did right away. Instead, I should break it up into chunks and present a little bit at each weekly group meeting.
I wish I had followed [...]

LaZy BuTT

Published by The Fake Engineer at 11:53 pm under Research, Stupid Stuff

After rolling out of bed today around 1 pm, I decided to spend most of my day without my lazy butt glued to a chair in front of my computer. Was there an urgent need for me to do my homework or do research? No. So why stay in front of my computer? No reason.
Two [...]

The politics of advisor selection

Published by The Fake Engineer at 4:21 pm under Research

Advisor-student matching at my school works like this…
1. Professors advertise open projects to students.
2. Students talk to professors individually about their open projects.
3. Students pick three open projects and rank them by preference.
4. Professors meet with each other to match students with projects.
My choices…
1. Project that is overdone and is closely tied to industry. Professor [...]

It feels like I just got married

Published by The Fake Engineer at 10:29 pm under Research

Wah, I just got my advisor. There goes my freedom…and my boredom.
